1,032 blue flags: one for each Lubbock child abused last year

Posted: Updated:

There's a field of blue flags in Kastman Park near Indiana and the South Loop honoring the victims of child abuse and neglect.

It's part of the Family Guidance and Outreach Center's Blue Ribbon Campaign. Each of the 1,032 flags represents a single child victimized in Lubbock last year.

"No one is immune to child abuse," Director Abby Reed said. "It's happening every day in every neighborhood in every school. There are children who are victims at home, and there are children who are victims are other places that is not their home. It is happening everywhere and the fact that we have a statistic like 1,032 confirmed victims, those aren't even the ones that are reported, those are the ones that are just confirmed."

"Our hope is, and our goal is, someday, that these 1,032 flags will not be here," Happy State Bank's Bud Holmes said. "We'd love to see that we're not here today talking about child abuse and child neglect in Lubbock, Texas."

The flags will be on display in the park for two weeks.

More than 65,000 cases of child abuse are confirmed each year, according to the Children's Advocacy Center of Texas. That includes one in four girls and one in six boys.
