LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock Veterans Advisory Committee and Interim Healthcare Foundation hosted West Texas Salute to Veterans. This event not only showed appreciation but provided information on resources available in West Texas.

Doris Reding with Interim Healthcare Foundation wanted to honor veterans beyond Veterans Day.

"So I looked at opportunities for veterans," Reding said. "What I saw was there are a few things around Veterans Day, and the Lubbock Veterans Advisory Committee had a good event, but there wasn't a lot during the rest of the year."

The main focus of this event was to provide support. Reding said breakout session included a range of topics like education, employment, and suicide prevention.

"The data today says about 20 veterans a day take their lives as a result of suicide," Reding said. "So we want to address that issue as well. "

Keynote speaker, Ron Milam served in Vietnam. He is now a history professor at Texas Tech.

"Our freshmen students at Texas Tech have never known a time where there nation wasn't at war," Milam said.

His message was how to address war with children.

"The future generations they need to know what mom, dad, grandpa now did in all these various wars," Milam said. "They're the ones who are going to carry on."

Milam said it is important to have opportunities to interact with fellow vets.

"I think it's good for those of us like me who've been around for awhile to recognize how many young veterans we have and they are going to be the future of what we do in America, the fact they have those experiences having served in Iraq and Afghanistan," Milam said.

Veterans from over 16 surrounding counties participated.
