Light wintry mix possible Wednesday

Light wintry mix possible Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Some wintry precipitation is possible next few days. There are usually surprises with winter weather here. At this point, it looks fairly minor.

TURNING COLDER: A cold front pushed farther south than I expected, which led to a chilly day for locations north of Lubbock. Here in the city it made it up to around 70 before dropping some this afternoon. Farther north it's been a lot colder, with some freezing fog around Amarillo. Here is the current temp map:

current temperature

Farther off to the east it's a lot messier. Showers and thunderstorms near Abilene to Dallas are moving NE. With cold air moving south, that's expected to change to wintry precip around Abilene. Farther north it's already wintry precip across much of Oklahoma, with a more expected there into Thursday.

TONIGHT: Cloudy and cold with a gusty NE wind. Low near 25. Some light freezing drizzle is possible, though it's a real low chance.

low temp forecast

WEDNESDAY: Some lift will move across our area to produce drizzle/freezing drizzle. But it's important to note the better lift will stay east of our area. That's where more icy conditions are expected, from the Big Country all the way up into Oklahoma.

It's not going to add up to much, but might be enough for a few slick roads. You'll especially need to watch for some slick bridges Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. One thing helping us is it's been so warm and sunny lately. And it's later in February, so we have a little more sunlight each day than late December.

Here is what one of our in-house models is projecting, pink here is suggesting either freezing drizzle/rain or sleet.

The higher likelihood for light wintry mix is over the Rolling Plains. This is our forecast:

chance for precip

Under the clouds the temperature won't move much all day, high near 30. Wind NE near 20mph early, dropping to near 10mph late afternoon.

THURSDAY: It'll stay cloudy and cold Wednesday night into Thursday. Another round of weak lift will move across our area, which might lead to either light rain or freezing rain. The temperature should climb into the mid 40s Thursday.

REST OF THE WEEK: Warmer with lots of sun, gusty wind this weekend.

7-day forecast

Have a great rest of your day. I'll have updated information tonight on FOX34 News at Nine and Whitney will have the latest info here early tomorrow morning.
