LUBBOCK, Texas -

Flu season is far from over, the severe outbreak continues nationwide and keeping the most vulnerable, children flu free is a challenge. Shallowater Elementary is combating the flu by utilizing a mobile application called Kinsa App and a smart thermometer.

"I read about it, it sounded to good to be true honestly," said Sarah Batson, a nurse at Shallowater Elementary. "So I thought lets try it and see what happens."

Batson said her school principal heard about the program last year and decided to apply. Shallowater Elementary was approved for the grant and received the thermometers mid-January.

"So they were able to give free thermometers to any member of our community or our school who downloaded the app on their phone or requested one," said Batson. " It's very simple to download the app, when you have the thermometer with you and your phone you take the temperature with it and it automatically pops up on the Kinsa app."

What's unique about the app is that children have their own profile and its especially convenient for those families with several kids. The app can also be used as a preventive tool, it advises parents about other sick children in the school. The app also features appropriate medical actions to take for a sick child.
