Fire near Slaton ravages twenty acres of land

LUBBOCK, Texas -

These 93 days without any rain are wreaking havoc for volunteer fire fighters and wildfires now are becoming an everyday occurrence. A wildfire near Slaton on highway 84 ravaged about 20 acres of land.

"I know there was an immediate response once those tones dropped, said Mary Leathers, public information officer with the Texas A&M Forest Service. "They were in route very quickly."

A combined effort from several volunteer departments kept the blaze contained.

"We had eleven homes threaten and saved and we had four businesses threatened and saved," said Leathers. "The fire got really close to them but do to the hard work of the local fire departments there were no reported losses of any homes."

The incredibly dry conditions means any little spark can light a blaze in any grassy area. The fire marshals weren't able to determine the cause of the fire, no injuries were reported and only and an RV was the only structure loss. Leathers said she expects the charred land to green back up once more rain presents itself in the area.
