How to spot gambling addiction

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

We interviewed a man who battled gambling for years and overcame it, we agreed not to identify him. So how can you tell if you have a gambling problem? Dr. George Comiskey with Texas Tech Center for Collegiate Recovery Community said that there are telling signs.

"When you start chasing. When you think you can bet and win back your losses, that's when you have a problem," Comiskey said. 'You've lost to a point where you've got some pretty heavy losses and you're trying to win that back? The house is always going to win."

Cominskey also mentioned how gambling addictions can be very complex.

"That part of the brain that gets the adrenaline going, gets a sense of high and the dopamine going," Comiskey said. "The whole atmosphere, the potential of the win, who I'm connecting with, while that's going on all sets up that physiology."

Comiskey said that some forms of gambling are okay.

"We're not saying that an innocent friendly bet is the worst thing in the world. It gets into when it's money that is your livelihood," Comiskey said. "When you effect your family, the business you work with, the business you own, then it's problematic and we can get you the help that you need."

There is a projected five billion dollars at stake this weekend, and if it reaches that number, it would be the highest ever. If you or a loved one has a gambling problem, click here for help.
