UPDATE: Hawaii worker responsible for false missile alert is terminated

Posted: Updated:

The worker who sent an alert warning of an imminent missile strike in Hawaii has been fired.

Investigators said he had a history of confusing drills with real life. The report also notes that the employee did nothing to correct the false alarm.

"Employee One said he didn't know it was an exercise," said Brig. Gen. Bruce Oliveira, Hawaii National Guard, "even though five others that were in the warning point room at that time heard 'exercise, exercise, exercise."

Investigators made at least two dozen recommendations, including more training and a faster way to correct an alert if one is sent by mistake again.
