Mayor and activists team up to fight sex trafficking in Lubbock

Posted: Updated:

Lubbock agencies are teaming together to fight sex trafficking in Lubbock.

Mayor Dan Pope proclaims it Sex Trafficking Awareness Month and joins activists and health care providers in discussing the red flags.

Out of 462 victims the rape crisis center helped in 2017, 69 were sex trafficking and several of these victims were recruited through social media.

Leslie Timmons said that's the gateway for traffickers to contact and brainwash victims.

"We just have to be very aware that victims don't always know that they're victims of sex trafficking," Timmons said. "They've been brainwashed to the point where they think they're going to spend their life with this person."

Timmons said monitoring your child's interaction on social media can ensure safety from predators.
