Local Xcel employees head to Puerto Rico for power grid reconstruction

Posted: Updated:

Xcel Energy is sending employees to Puerto Rico to reconstruct the island's power grid.

In September, Hurricane Maria devastated the territory, knocking out power to many portions of the island ever since.

Delwin Britton, a line foreman, says the volunteers are a brotherhood ready to help.

"It's not too bad," he said. "Worst part's leaving your family, but I mean we're all family here at Xcel -- all those guys sitting over there at that table -- they're my brothers. So it's like you're going off with family."

Close to 65 employees will be deployed from Xcel's eight state territory.

The latest projections indicate full power won't be restored to the island until May.
