How It Happened

Set One:

LCU overcame 17 kills from Newman (five each from Kayla Turner and Hailey Brady) to claim the opening set 27-25. Through six lead changes, LCU led 22-18 and eventually 24-21 before fighting off a Jets rally, which tied the score at 24-24. An attack error led to NU taking a 25-24 set-point lead, but LCU rebounded with an Emily Hanaway kill leading to a 3-0 run capped by a kill from Lauren Zoller. LCU produced 16 kills in the set, with Zoller and Camille Porco each with five. Reagan Roth of Newman produced 15 assists in the set and Anna Burton had 11 of the Jets 27 digs in the set.

Set Two:

Dropping the opening set did not bother the Jets, who opened the second set with a 10-0 run. Kayla Turner served 10 consecutive serves and had three aces in the string.  LCU trailed as much as 17-2 in the set, with a serving error by Newman attributing to one of the two LCU points.  The Lady Chaps did fight back outscoring the Jets 13-4 over the following 17 points, but the deficit was too much to overcome and LCU fell 25-17 in the set. Each team had 11 kills in the set, with Channing Stewart contributing six of LCU’s 11 kills. Turner led the Jets in the set with three kills, three aces and five digs.

Set Three:

The third set had a different tempo than the second set, as the teams opened the see-saw set with an 8-8 tie score. Stewart’s ensuing kill provided was part of a small 4-1 run and gave LCU a 9-8 lead and a lead they would not relinquish. The 4-1 run was part of an 8-3 run to give them a slight cushion at 15-10 and they would go on to claim the set 25-17 behind six kills from Stewart. LCU had a 16-9 advantage in kills in the set and produced a .324 attack percentage, aided by 15 assists from Warnack.

Set Four:

LCU overcame a 14-9 deficit in the fourth set with a 6-1 run paced by a pair of kills from Lauren Zoller and a trio of Jets attack errors, which knotted up the set at 15-15. The Lady Chaps were unable to take the lead and fell to a 19-17 deficit before bouncing back with 5-0 run. Emily Harvey’s third attack error during the run resulted in a 22-19 lead for LCU. Avery Moore, who co-led LCU in the set with four kills (alongside Zoller), was able to get the final kill of the set for a 25-22 set win to clinch the match 3-1. Turner led Newman with six kills in the set.

Inside the Numbers:

5-0 – Of LCU’s 20 matches, Thursday marked the fifth time LCU has won the opening set, and they have now completed the task in three straight home matches. They are now 5-0 this season when winning the first set.

7-5 – LCU moves to 7-5 all-time against Newman. The win Thursday splits the head-to-head season series (1-1). If the two teams are tied (and not tied with any additional teams) in the conference schedule at regular season’s end, Newman will hold the tiebreaker advantage with a 4-3 advantage in sets won on the season.

11 – Camille Porco’s 11 kills marked a career high for the second-year Lady Chap.

14 – Channing Stewart, who had a career high 25 kills over Newman on Sept. 16, 2014, produced 14 kills for her third consecutive match with at least 10 kills.  She did not have a match in double figures in kills this season prior to the current three-match stretch.

32 – Lauren Zoller’s 15 kills gives her 32 kills in her prior two matches (17 vs. Midwestern State on Oct. 10) for her best two-match sequence this season.

50 – Brynn Warnack’s 50 assists marked her second match with at least 50 assists this season. The freshman setter was four shy of a career mark of 54 on Sept. 8 vs. Colorado Christian.  She also completed her team-leading sixth double double with the 10 digs (fourth at home).

Up Next:

LCU will host Heartland Conference leading Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday (at noon), who will arrive on a 10-match win streak overall and winners of their last 43 regular season conference matches.
