What is FOX34 VIPIR?

FOX34 VIPIR is advanced radar technology that gives you earlier notice that dangerous weather is approaching.

First, you’re probably wondering about the name. VIPIR stands for Volumetric Imaging and Processing of Integrated Radar. VIPIR has set the industry standard for TV radar systems. We’re proud to have made the significant investment in this technology. We’re able to show you high-resolution radar data from not only Lubbock but a vast area stretching from the Permian Basin to the Panhandle and into Eastern New Mexico, with updates minute by minute.

FOX34 VIPIR not only shows you where it’s raining, sleeting or snowing…but gives arrival times for the precipitation and shows how much has fallen already. Whether it’s in Lubbock, Levelland, Spur or Hobbs…or anywhere in the nation…we can track rain and storms, along with the latest advisories, watches and warning.

When we’re watching dangerous storms we can get a good estimate on hail size and wind strength. In fact, we have a storm threats product that’ll clearly show you what the greatest risk is from an advancing storm.

One of the most significant tools FOX34 VIPIR has is the ability to detect dangerous twisting of the wind. We see spinning circles on the map to highlight where rotation is developing. You’ll see the same alerts pop-up whether you’re watching on TV at home or watching the FOX34 VIPIR live stream. This proprietary technology has proven itself in just the first year of using FOX34 VIPIR on the South Plains. It can mean an earlier heads-up that storms are getting bad.

There are several other products you’ll see displayed that deal with rotation and tornadic development. It’s all stuff we’d rather not have to use; but when the weather gets bad this lets us clearly and calmly let you know what’s happening.

As science and technology advancements are made you’ll continue to see new tools rolled out on FOX34 VIPIR. It’s one of several systems we use to keep you updated on South Plains weather.
