Eppler: 'Rogue One' is top tier 'Star Wars'

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" feels like a "Star Wars" movie but it's offering something we haven't seen in this series before, rather than just pretending to be fresh when it's really a remake (ahem, "The Force Awakens").

This is a "Star Wars" story without much use of Jedi, the Sith, light sabers and The Force. The characters at the center of the action here are spies, assassins, sharp shooters and pilots.

It's set just before the events of the original 1977 movie with the Empire threatening to wipe out the Rebel forces with something called The Death Star. Felicity Jones is Jyn Erso, whose father was captured by the Empire to design the thing. The Rebels believe she can lead them to help rescue him and sabotage the weapon.

No more plot details here - just to say that Jyn is teamed up with a group of fighters for her mission and I enjoyed all of these supporting characters with each making an impact in a specific way.

The script by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy has a "Dirty Dozen"-type war movie feel, and the action directed by Gareth Edwards puts you right in the middle of it.

I love the direction Disney has taken "Star Wars" after two movies - an emphasis on female empowerment and diversity. And the studio is choosing good filmmakers and storytellers to open this universe up to more possibilities.

"Rogue One" is easily one of my two favorite "Star Wars" movies - a blockbuster brave enough to take major risks.
