PLAINVIEW, Texas (March 22, 2016) – Five unanswered runs and Ernesto Lizardi's 4-for-5 performance at the plate with four RBI helped lead Wayland Baptist University to a 10-8 home win over No.10 Lubbock Christian University Tuesday night at Wilder Field.
LCU had a grand slam by Dillon Drury (second home run of the season against WBU) followed two outs later by a Jaime Bustamante solo homer for a 5-0 lead in the second inning. WBU responded with five straight runs, with three in the bottom of the second inning and a pair in the third inning to tie the game 5-5. Alex Mumm led off the bottom of the second with a home run and Hector Romero followed later in the inning with a two-run triple to occupy the three-run inning, and a pair of leadoff singles in the third inning led to the Pioneers tying the game at 5-5. Brent Stewartled off the top of the fifth inning with his team co-leading fourth home run of the season to help LCU regain the lead in a three-run inning (LCU led 8-5). WBU then went on for five straight runs. Caleb Davidson hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Lizardi gave WBU their first lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double for a 9-8 advantage. They added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a run scoring on a wild pitch. LCU had a chance to rally in the ninth inning with two runners in scoring position with one out, but WBU pitcher Paxton Bartley earned the save forcing Stewart to line out and striking out Drury on an eight-pitch at-bat.
Colin Fraley made his first collegiate start on the mound for LCU and went three innings. He did not factor into the decision, as Albert Aveytia (1-4) was saddled with the loss going 3.1 innings in relief. Mason Taylor, who relieved WBU starter Jonathan Frost after three innings, claimed the win and improved to 4-3. WBU's bullpen did not allow a hit over the final three innings.
Drury was 2-for-4 with four RBI in the loss for LCU. Bustamante finished 2-for-2 and Tony Reyes was 2-for-4 in the loss as well. Along with Lizardi, the Pioneers received a 3-for-3 performance at the plate from Aaron Vallance. The two teams combined for five home runs in the game (three by LCU).
LCU fell to 18-7 and WBU moved to 27-8 with the win. The Chaps return to Heartland Conference play Thursday hosting conference-leading Arkansas - Fort Smith for a series opening doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Hays Field.
